A facial oil is an oil-based skincare product typically used toward the end of a routine. Facial oils are primarily emollient, meaning they help soften + smooth the surface of the skin while adding richness and nourishment. They can be especially useful when skin feels dry, dehydrated, tight or uncomfortable. Most facial oils are applied after water-based serums + moisturizer, although a drop can also be mixed into moisturizer for a lighter application. Facial oils are not automatically unsuitable for oily or acne-prone skin. Whether an oil works well depends on the specific oil or formula, the amount used + the individual skin’s tendency toward congestion. They also do not replace targeted treatments for concerns such as acne, pigmentation or exfoliation.
